On the heels of opening its first Washington, D.C. store and announcing plans for 23 more in the capital, Peet’s Coffee & Tea (Emeryville, Calif.) revealed that it plans to open 20 stories in Chicago this year.

Half of the stores will be located in former Caribou Coffee Company (Minneapolis) locations, which will be rebranded as Peet's. Caribou says it plans to close 18 of its Chicago outlets, according to the Chicago Business Journal.

Peet’s entered its largest expansion phase last year, adding 29 stores in the Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio; Detroit; and Pittsburgh areas. The new Washington D.C. and Chicago additions will bring the company’s total to nearly 3,000 stores by the end of the year.
