The city planning commission in Milford, Ohio, voted against a rezoning proposal that would have allowed Wal-Mart Stores (Bentonville, Ark.) to build a 203,000-square-foot store on land currently being used as a mobile home park.

The decision came just days after a zoning commission in Deerfield Township, Ohio, created obstacles to Wal-Mart Stores building a new supercenter there.

Both towns are in the Cincinnati area.

“The area is a gateway to Milford and, as its gateway, should reflect the character of . . . a small bedroom community,” said a member of the commission, which voted unanimously. The issue now goes to Milford's city council.
