Federated Department Stores Inc. (Cincinnati) has announced plans to redevelop the former Stern's department store at Roosevelt Field in Garden City, N.Y., into a 65,000-square-foot, two-level Bloomingdale's furniture store. The project will also include the area's first store for sporting goods retailer Galyan's Trading Co. Inc. (Plainfield, Ind.).

The Bloomingdale's store will feature a full furniture assortment, including bedding. “In the new Roosevelt Field furniture store, we will expand our offerings dramatically,” said Bloomingdale's chairman Michael Gould.

The Galyan's Sports and Outdoor Adventure store will occupy 100,000 square feet, also on two levels. It will feature a distinctive two-story glass facade, a 55-foot-high interior atrium, metal and timber appointments and interactive elements, such as the retailer's signature rock-climbing wall. The departments will include fishing, camping, exercise, golf, boats and bicycles.

“We are thrilled to be a part of Roosevelt Field,” said Galyan's chairman and ceo Robert Mang. “We believe that Hempstead, Garden City and the Long Island area reflect the active-lifestyle that we promote.”

Once the new Bloomingdale's furniture store is complete, the retailer's current Roosevelt Field location will be extensively remodeled to feature a broader selection of fashion accessories, men's and women's apparel.

Construction on the two new stores will begin this spring, with store openings planned for fall 2003. Development efforts are ongoing regarding the additional 60,000 square feet of space in the building.
