Early holiday boosts March results for Neiman Marcus

An early Easter and strong sales in the northeast U.S. boosted The Neiman Marcus Group's same-store sales by 3.2 percent in March.

However, the Dallas-based department store chain warned that the early Easter is expected to hurt April sales, and that sales for the spring season will be below 2001 levels.

Comparable revenues at Neiman Marcus Direct were off in March, impacted by the company's decision to eliminate certain catalogs it felt were unprofitable.

“We are pleased with our March sales results,” said president and ceo Burt Tansky, “but continue to plan sales for the spring season. This expected decline is partially a result of our decision to eliminate certain promotional events that had been added last spring in an effort to reduce inventory levels.”

The Neiman Marcus Group operates 33 Neiman Marcus stores in about 20 states and the District of Columbia, as well as two Bergdorf Goodman stores in New York and about 10 clearance centers.
