Fleming Cleans Out Its Furrs

Food distributor sells Furrs Supermarkets, buys Smith's Stores

Fleming Companies Inc. (Lewisville, Texas), a wholesale food distributor, has sold 36 Furrs Supermarkets stores and purchased five Smith's Food & Drug Stores in two separate deals. Fleming expects to add $175 million in revenues with its decisions.

Fleming had earlier agreed to purchase 66 Furrs Supermarkets in New Mexico and Texas. Furrs is currently in bankruptcy proceedings and has closed 30 other locations.

Fleming Companies supplies grocery items to approximately 7000 retailers, including mass merchandisers under its franchised names, like IGA and Piggly Wiggly. Fleming operates more than 90 stores under the Food4Less, Rainbow Foods and Yes!Less banners. The firm has an agreement to become Kmart's sole foods and consumables supplier.
