Family Dollar Stores Inc. (Matthews, N.C.) has reported that it opened 40 new stores during the four-week period ended Nov. 3, 2001.

The new store locations include: seven in Ohio, four each in Michigan and Texas, three each in New Mexico and Pennsylvania, two each in Arizona, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia and one each in Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nebraska, New York and Wisconsin. In early September, the retailer – clearly profiting from the consumer search for discounts and bargains – announced it had opened 50 new stores during the four-week period ending September 1. The discount store chain now operates 4194 stores in 39 states.

The retailer says its target customer is a woman shopping for a family that makes less than $25,000 a year. It offers discounted prices for clothing, food, health and beauty supplies, automotive supplies, housewares and school supplies. Most merchandise (national brands, Family Dollar private labels, and unbranded items) is priced under $10.
