Debenhams Closing, Revamping Stores

Former Amazon, Nike exec announces “redesign” strategy

Debenhams (London) has announced it will be closing up to 10 of its department stores, as well as 11 of its warehouses.

The closures are part of the “redesign” strategy that Chief Executive Officer Sergio Bucher is initiating as he attempts to revamp and turn business around, reports Financial Times. Bucher previously worked for Amazon (Seattle) and Nike (Beaverton, Ore.) and came on board seven months ago.

Other elements of his plan include capitalizing on experiential shopping rather than simply on products, offering more beauty services as well as cafes and restaurants. He also intends to cut about 10 percent of the stores’ product selection so they don’t appear as cluttered.
