Dollar General Plans Push into Health Care

Dollar General (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) has hired Albert Wu, M.D., as its VP, Chief Medical Officer, a newly created role, according to a company press release. The discount retailer plans to add dental, nutritional, cold/cough products among other health care-related offerings.

Wu will be responsible for developing the company’s ongoing health care services efforts and will report to Jeff Owen, Chief Operating Officer.

Dollar General CEO Todd Vasos says, “At Dollar General, we are always looking for new ways to serve, and our customers have told us that they would like to see increased access to affordable healthcare products and services in their communities … Our goal is to build and enhance affordable healthcare offerings for our customers, especially in the rural communities we serve.”

Reportedly, 75 percent of the U.S. population lives within at least five miles of a Dollar General location. There are 17,000-plus stores nationwide.
