Asics New York Flagship Closes

Licensing dispute shuts down last U.S. store

Asics’ (Kobe, Japan) flagship store in New York’s Times Square has abruptly closed due to litigation between Asics America (Irvine, Calif.) and Windsor Financial Group (Horsham, Penn.), which has exclusive rights to operate the brand's retail stores in the U.S.

The 5000-square-foot store, which has been open less than a year, is the last of 13 freestanding Asics stores in the U.S. to close after Asics severed its agreement with Windsor in July, after Asics alleged that Windsor committed breach of contract.

Windsor has filed suit against Asics, alleging the company committed fraud and breach of contract by not supplying Windsor with the brand’s full array of merchandise and failing to market and promote the brand. Consequently, Windsor's sales in the brick-and-mortar stores suffered and it was unable to support its stores’ leases, reports The New York Post.
