Brooks Brothers (New York), the classic men’s apparel retailer that had once been owned by Marks & Spencer Group p.l.c. (London), has entered into a joint venture agreement with Brightark Ltd. (London) to create Brooks Brothers United Kingdom and open stores in the U.K. and Ireland.

Plans are to open several Brooks Brothers stores within the next five years. The first will open at the end of this month at Lion Plaza in the center of London’s financial district.

Brooks Brothers is a division of Retail Brands Alliance Inc. (Enfield, Conn.), which bought the 187-year-old, 160-store brand from Marks & Spencer in 2001.

Claudio Del Vecchio, president and ceo of Retail Brand Alliance, said, “We are pleased to have this unique opportunity to introduce Brooks Brothers to one of the world’s fashion capitals. There is great potential for the Brooks Brothers brand in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The classic, elegant design of the new London store will be in fitting with the Brooks Brothers image, and the perfect setting to showcase our collections of fine, classic American clothing.”
