Comparable Sales Grow at Walmart

Retailer still wary about fourth quarter figures

In what analysts are hoping is a sign of a strong holiday season, Walmart Stores Inc. (Bentonville, Ark.) experienced U.S. comparable sales growth for the first time in seven quarters, for the three months that ended in October.

Total revenues rose 2.9 percent to $119 billion, up from last year’s $115.69 billion for the same quarter, according to Women’s Wear Daily. Comparable sales rose 0.5 percent. Net sales for Walmart U.S. rose 3.4 percent to $70 billion versus the same period in 2013.

Walmart expects U.S. comps to rise by one percent — at most — after declining 0.4 percent in the 2013 period.
