Debenham Plans Australian Expansion

Opening first of at least 10 stores

Debenham (London) announced that it will open its first department store in Australia next year. Expected to open in September 2017 in Melbourne, the store is also expected to bring in sales of more than $20 million a year once established, despite the fact that the last British department store in Australia closed its doors in the country in 1995.

The company expects its store to fare well because it will offer British fashions at “accessible” prices, reports The Australian Financial Review. Consequently, the company has plans to open at least nine more stores throughout the country. The Melbourne store will measure almost 42,000 square feet in size and will stock about 25,000 products, including the store’s exclusive private-label lines. The store’s interior will be designed by a British-based design firm.
