Dollar General, Family Dollar Deal Unlikely

Companies reach impasse, Dollar Tree acquisition considered

Dollar General (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) has chosen not to raise its bid to acquire Family Dollar (Charlotte, N.C.) or dispute store divestiture figures associated with its bid to purchase the competing chain. Experts say this is most likely the end of the long pursuit by Dollar General to acquire Family Dollar.

Family Dollar said the Federal Trade Commission “could require up to 4000 store divestitures if Dollar General were to acquire Family Dollar, versus around 310 stores in a rival bid by Dollar Tree,” according to Supermarket News. Family Dollar shareholders will vote on the Dollar Tree offer next week.
