Panel: In-Store Sales to Grow

Real-life interaction trumps online convenience

Online retailers might not be doing as much damage to traditional brick-and-mortar stores as once thought, suggest panelists at the Digital Life Design conference in Munich this week.

Executives from companies including Telefonica SA, Yahoo Inc. and Tumblr say that, while in recent years, growth in Internet retailing has outpaced store sales, brick-and-mortar stores are regaining ground. The executives cited shoppers’ desire for “real-life interaction” when shopping, according to Bloomberg News.

Data from researcher Euromonitor shows that in-store revenue growth will increase to 4.9 percent in 2019, from 1.6 percent in 2013. Expansion of e-commerce sales is expected to decline from 21 percent to 12 percent.

In-store sales still account for more than 90 percent of retail revenue worldwide.
