New York-based Sandow and Tokyo-based Mark Styler Co. Ltd. have formed a long-term partnership to launch retail lifestyle brand Fred Segal in Japan in 2013. As part of the agreement, Mitsubishi Corp. Fashion Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Corp., will manufacture Fred Segal-branded product for distribution in the Japanese market. This deal marks the first time in more than 50 years that the Fred Segal name has been used outside of its original Los Angeles locations.

The first standalone Fred Segal flagship is slated to open in Tokyo in September 2013 and will house a curated mix of luxury and unique products from both independent brands and Fred Segal-branded merchandise. The location will also feature a salon and spa like the original brand emporiums in Los Angeles.

In January 2012, Sandow acquired the worldwide rights to the Fred Segal brand. “Part of our strategy was to expand the Fred Segal brand internationally. The Japanese level of sophistication when it comes to fashion/lifestyle brands, coupled with their understanding and appreciation for the authenticity and appeal of Fred Segal, made us focus on this market first,” says Adam Sandow, chairman and ceo, Sandow.
