Gap Inc. (San Francisco) has announced it will improve its business model by reducing the number of stores it operates globally. The move will primarily focus on closing select stores outside the U.S.

Retailing Today reports the company will close all 53 Old Navy stores in Japan. Plans to close some Banana Republic stores, mostly outside of North America, have also been announced. The move is a response to Gap’s announcement Thursday that first quarter results marked the fifth consecutive quarter of reduced revenue and profit.
