To transform a landmarked YMCA building into a retail space selling eco-friendly living and building supplies, designers shopped local – as in the store itself.

All the materials used to create the Green Depot’s first New York store can be purchased there, says Colin Brice, principal at New York-based Mapos, which designed the flagship. “Our goal was to showcase these materials in effective ways so the customer could easily get a sense for how they’re used,” explains Brice.

For the fixtures, designers used construction-grade, low-VOC oriented strand board (OSB) and applied a colorful low-VOC laminate finish to the fixture interiors while clear-coating the outside. “We employed this ‘inside-out’ modern approach to showcase what might be utilitarian materials in highly refined ways,” says Brice.

Designers also repurposed parts of the historic building on the Bowery, turning floor joists into table tops and cutting the water heater from the old pool into rings for planters and garden furniture.

Brice adds that by leveraging these existing materials and shopping local, the project cost was “comparable to retail construction in SoHo.”
