Honoring 9-11

Bergdorf Goodman unveils commemorative windows

Bergdorf Goodman (New York) has debuted its second annual set of windows devoted to commemorating the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

This year's display, in the retailer's 58th Street windows, features the work of New York artist Manju Shandler, a grid of more than 1000 brick-size illustrations honoring the victims of the World Trade Center attacks. The display will stay until September 12, the first day of New York Fashion Week.

Unlike a year ago, when nearly every New York retailer produced a window display to honor the first anniversary of the attacks, Bergdorf Goodman is apparently alone in observing this second anniversary. “Is it appropriate? I had to ask myself,” Linda Fargo, Bergdorf's vp for visual merchandising. told The New York Times. “With this kind of thing there is no right or wrong. September 11 still is a very important day in American history, and we wanted to pay our respects.”

Last year, the store marked the date with an exhibition of vintage American flags. Absent then, as now, were mannequins, slogans and other hints of commerce.
