Grocers Plan for Twin City Expansions

Supermarket competition increases

Published

on

Three grocery chains, Meijer Inc. (Greenville, Mich.), Lucky’s Market (Niwot, Colo.) and Whole Foods Market Inc. (Austin, Texas), have reportedly all shown interest in expanding to the Minneapolis-St. Paul market according to Star Tribune.

Meijer currently operates 220 stores in Michigan and surrounding states, but an expansion into the Minneapolis region would mark entrance into a new market. Lucky’s Markets also currently operates in 11 states, but would be entering Minnesota for the first time.

Whole Foods currently operates in the Twin Cities, but is looking to expand its new small format “365” store, which is debuting in California and Texas this year.

The report states the grocery retailers are looking into potential for growth in the region after other chains closed there in 2014, and due to increased consumer demand for diverse grocery options.
