Tekserve to Close

Cites competition, high rent

Tekserve (New York) will close its doors August 15 after 29 years in business, reports The New York Times.

The popular Apple reseller and technology services provider had a cult following among Apple enthusiasts long before Apple stores emerged on the retail scene.

Tekserve opened in 1987, focusing exclusively on repairs at first, and later becoming a reseller. The store was further popularized by Sex and the City’s Carrie Bradshaw character, who visited the store when her Apple laptop crashed.

The company cited competition from Apple and Best Buy stores, along with swiftly rising rent, as the reason for the closure. About 70 employees will lose their jobs.
