Retail Sales Post Impressive Gains

March figures exceed estimates, growing 1.6 percent

Retail sales posted their biggest gain in a year and a half in March, growing 1.6 percent, according to Bloomberg News

Economists polled by Market Watch had predicted an increase of 1.1 percent.

Sales of new cars and trucks, including in the retail sales figures, rose 3.1 percent, their best performance to date this year. Auto sales represent about 20 percent of all retail sales.
