Think of Hawaii and you think of sun, surf, sand — and probably pineapples. Honolulu's newest shopping center and visitor attraction, The Dole Cannery, was built on the site of what was once the world's largest fruit-processing plant. Environmental graphics designed by Honolulu-based Nick Kaars & Associates are based on the history of the Dole company. Elements such as light bollards made from old stainless steel fruit-carrying trays and concrete columns wrapped in enlarged versions of vintage pineapple can labels create a strong sense of place.
