Starbucks closes its original New York location

Published

on

Starbucks Corp. (Seattle) has closed the New York location it first opened in April 1994. That branch, on Broadway at 87th Street, was the coffee company's first Manhattan unit.

There are now three other Starbucks on Broadway within 10 blocks in either direction of that pioneer location, plus yet another on 86th Street and Columbus Avenue.

“The lease was up,” explained a Starbucks spokesman. “We look at everything, the entire business, including that there are others in the area that are just as convenient.”

The oldest New York Starbucks now in existence is the unit on First Avenue and 75th Street, which opened nine years ago. There are currently 162 Starbucks locations in New York's five boroughs — 140 in Manhattan.
