Walmart (Bentonville, Ark.) announced that it has acquired Parcel (New York), a technology-based, same-day, last-mile delivery program. The program specifically specializes in perishable and non-perishable delivery to New York customers.

“New York City is the top market for both Jet and Wal-Mart.com,” said Nate Faust, senior vice president of Wal-Mart U.S.’s e-commerce supply chain. “Because of the density of the area, along with the proximity of our fulfillment centers, it’s the perfect place for high-impact innovation.

The company plans to use the service for both its Walmart and Jet customers, particularly with both banner’s same-day deliveries.

The move comes as a next step in the retailer’s efforts to make deliveries faster and more convenient so that it can better compete with Amazon (Seattle), according to Women’s Wear Daily.
