This story was updated on June 6 to reflect newer reporting on the number of planned closures.

About 100 Sears (Hoffman Estates, IL) Hometown stores will close in the coming weeks, which will reduce the banner’s footprint by roughly half, CNN reports.

The closures were announced via each store’s Facebook page and are spread across about 30 states, the article says.

Earlier, VMSD cited the Missourian, which spoke with employees at a Sears Hometown store in Washington, MO who said the retailer was preparing to shutter 60 locations.

The employees told the paper the stores will close sometime in June. They also said that corporate had “taken over operations” of the Washington location, which is a Sears Hometown Store and part of a company that was spun off from the original Sears stores in 2012.

Once America’s largest retailer, Sears filed for bankruptcy in 2018 and was acquired by Transformco the following year. There are fewer than 25 large-format Sears stores still in operation.
