Cincinnati-based Macy’s Inc. reported total sales of $1.812 billion for the four weeks ended Aug. 25, 2012, an increase of 5.7 percent. Same-store sales were up 5.1 percent for the month.

“Sales exceeded our expectations in August, and the strength was broad-based across merchandise categories, geographies and channels,” Terry Lundgren, chairman, president and ceo of Macy’s, Inc., says.

The department store retailer says back-to-school results in the millennial customer areas and women’s apparel were strong categories, while men’s apparel, home furnishings, beauty, women’s shoes and handbags also performed well.

Macy’s will receive the VMSD/Peter Glen Retailer of the Year at the International Retail Design Conference, September 5 to 7, at the Renaissance Chicago Downtown. Amy Hanson, Macy’s executive vp, property development and credit and customer service, will accept the award and share the brand’s story. For more information, visit irdconline.com.
