Amazon's Borders Patrol

E-tailer rumored to be taking over bookseller's online operations

Published

The Borders Group (Ann Arbor, Mich.) is reportedly ready to drop out of the Internet book-selling business and turn its online operations over to Amazon.com. Neither company would comment on the report. Reuters reported that Amazon had said it would announce a partnership with another company on Wednesday but did not disclose the name. Amazon founder and ceo Jeff Bezos is expected to hold a news conference in New York today to make “a company announcement.”

The expectation is that Borders will promote Amazon's web site at its bookstores. The e-tailer's similar alliances with retailers like Toys 'R'Us have been regarded as successful for both parties. The benefit to Amazon may be more symbolic than financial. In direct competition with Amazon.com and arch-rival Barnesandnoble.com, Borders'online unit Borders.com posted a loss of $18.4 million for the business year ended January. Last month, the company said it was exploring partnerships to help reduce its costs.
