New York-based Barnes & Noble Inc. reported strong sales for the nine-week holiday period ending January 1, 2011. Store sales were up 8.2 percent to $1.1 billion, with comparable store sales increasing 9.7 percent, marking the bookstores’ best comparable store sales performance in more than a decade.

Online comparable sales increased 78 percent compared to the 2009 holiday selling season.

The bookseller says strong online and in-store sales were led by consumer demand for the retailer’s NOOK brand of eReading products, while hardcover books and products in its Toys & Games department were also popular this holiday.

Barnes & Noble Inc. operates 717 bookstores in 50 states.
