Shopping center developer Equity One Inc. (Miami) bought the former New York Barney's flagship, now occupied by discount department store Loehmann’s. The 56,870-sqaure-foot space on West 16th Street was purchased for $55 million.

“I see it as a great growth vehicle for the higher-end department stores that are operating today,” said Peter Ripka, a partner at Ripco Real Estate Corp. and broker on the sale, in a WWD article.

Barney’s left the location in 1993 and Loehmann’s moved into the building in 1996. Loehmann’s lease expects to expire in 2016.

Equity One is currently building the Gallery at Westbury Plaza in Westbury, N.Y., where Nordstrom Rack will be one of its tenants.
