Due to a drop in sales during the 2019 holiday season, fashion retailer Express (Columbus, Ohio) has announced plans to close 91 stores, mainly located in shopping malls.

These closures will be spread out over the span of two years: 31 stores will be closed by the end of the month, 35 more by January 2021 and the remaining by 2022, according to Microsoft News.

Several mall-based retailers have faced challenges in the past few years. Last year, Forever 21 filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, Charlotte Russe faced liquidation and all American Payless ShoeSource locations closed.

Express says it has a turnaround strategy in the works, including plans to minimize cost by cutting 10 percent of jobs at the Columbus, Ohio, headquarters and at its design studio in New York.
