FDA Cites Tobacco Sales Violations by Walgreens

Walgreens named as least compliant retailer

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced last Thursday that it would soon be taking action against retailers who were not in compliance with its tobacco-sales regulations, namely its prohibiting of sales to minors.

According to the agency, Walgreens Boots Alliance (Deerfield, Ill.) is the top violator among several pharmacies, with 22 percent of its stores inspected failing compliance. “I will be writing [to] the corporate management of Walgreens and requesting a meeting with them to discuss whether there is a corporate-wide issue related to their stores’ non-compliance,” said FDA commissioner Scott Gottlieb, according to Reuters.

Prior to Thursday’s notice, Walgreens was notified by more than 1550 warning letters and 240 civil penalty actions for illegal sales to minors.
