International design firm Fitch:Worldwide has announced the appointment of Rodney Fitch, founder of the original company that bears his name, as chairman of the group. He will be based in the firm's London head office.

Current ceo Kevin Roche will be stepping down, after 18 months in the position.

The company said Chris Barriscale, based in San Francisco as creative director of branded environments for Fitch North America, will be assuming most of Roche's retail obligations going forward. And Scott Wolfe, who joined the company in January 2000 and has served first as North American cfo and then as director of finance, will become cfo of Fitch Worldwide and will be based in Columbus, Ohio.

Fitch, who returns to the company after an absence of nine years, built Fitch & Co into one of the most successful design firms in the world before leaving in 1994 to set up a new specialist retail design practice.

The firm said Fitch will focus on three objectives: the strategic positioning of the company; client development; and the recruitment, development and retention of talent. Additionally, he will serve as chair of a Global Studio, comprised of staff reflecting the firm's interdisciplinary culture and focused on enhancing strategic and creative output.

“I really am over the moon about this appointment,” Rodney Fitch said. “During the past decade, the firm, together with our industry, has changed quite a bit. But the firm's constants of a terrific team, fantastic clients and wonderful work remain. I'm delighted to be a part of it again. I'm home!”

“We are delighted to put the Fitch back into Fitch,” said Sir Martin Sorrell, ceo of WPP plc (London), Fitch's parent company. “We believe that Rodney's appointment will ensure that Fitch continues to be one of the foremost firms in its industry, concentrating on brand communications and packaging, retail and live design, and product design. Under Rodney's guidance, we are sure that Fitch will remain a leader in adding value to both its clients and its people.”
