GameStop to Stay Closed on Thanksgiving

Follows similar announcement by Staples

GameStop (Grapevine, Texas) has announced that all brick-and-mortar locations will stay closed Thanksgiving day, rather than opening early for Black Friday sales. Stores plan to open at 5 a.m. on Black Friday instead.

Fortune reports that company spokesmen cited that company employees and customers should have the day off to spend time with friends and family as the reason for this decision. The article also states that the move will save the company money by eliminating the need to pay employees holiday wages.

GameStop’s announcement comes after Staples Inc. (Framingham, Mass.) made a similar announcement earlier this month. The office supply retailer stated it would hold additional sales events before and after Thanksgiving for Black Friday shoppers.
