Macy's Sales Drop Slows in September

Total and same-store sales results show improvement over disappointing August

Macy's Inc. (Cincinnati) reported that the company’s total sales dropped 2.4 percent to $2.043 billion for the five weeks ended Oct. 3, 2009. On a same-store basis, the department store retailer’s sales were down 2.3 percent in September.

The month’s tally shows an improvement over August, when Macy's reported an 8.5 percent decrease in total sales and an 8.1 percent drop in same-store sales.

For the year to date, Macy's total sales are 8.5 percent lower compared to total sales during the first 35 weeks of 2008. On a same-store basis, year-to-date sales are down 8.2 percent.

Online sales continue to be strong, rising 14.8 percent in September 2009 and 13.3 percent for the year-to-date. Online sales are included in the same-store sales calculation for Macy's Inc.
