Consumers in the U.S. could spend up to $21.2 billion this Mother’s Day, according to the National Retail Federation (Washington, D.C.). The trade group says the predicted figures would represent a significant increase over 2014 sales for the holiday, and possibly the greatest Mother’s Day spending since the organization began tracking the holiday’s sales figures 12 years ago.

An average $172.63 will be spent on mom this year, says the NRF, nearly $10 more than last year’s average, according to the Mother’s Day Spending Survey, conducted this year for the NRF by Prosper Insights & Analytics.

Respondents said the bulk of their Mother’s Day spending would be on flowers and dining; Participants said they would also shop at department stores (33.4 percent), specialty stores (28.2 percent) and discount stores (24.8 percent). Fewer respondents (25 percent) said they would be shopping online this year, down from 29 percent in 2014.
