Luxury-goods department store retailer Neiman Marcus Group Inc. (Dallas) announced ceo Burton Tansky will retire in October. Current executive vp Karen Katz, who has been with the company since 1985, has been named as his replacement.

Tansky, who has appointed ceo in 2001, will remain nonexecutive chairman of the board.

He started his career in retailing at Kaufman's department store in 1961 and moved to I. Magnin in 1974, according to The Wall Street Journal. He served as president at Saks Inc.'s Saks Fifth Avenue before joining Neiman Marcus in 1989 as head of New York-based Bergdorf Goodman.

While the Dallas-based chain has struggled during the recession, it recently reported same-store sales rose 9.6 percent in March.
