(PRESS RELEASE) WASHINGTON, DC – The National Retail Federation announced the 2024 Top 50 Global Retailers. Conducted by Kantar, the 2024 list ranks international retailers, based on their operational performance as of the beginning of 2023.

“In our increasingly interconnected global economy, retailers are continually expanding their international customer base,” NRF Executive Director of Research Mark Mathews said. “It is exciting to see the tremendous breadth and diversity of businesses that are featured in this year’s Global Top 50.”

Continuing its reign as the world’s largest retailer, Walmart maintained its top ranking with a robust online marketplace and a range of new financial resources for shoppers. Additionally, the retailer’s Walmart+ media platform continues to expand outside the U.S.

There was no movement among the Top 10 retailers from 2023 to 2024. Amazon remained in second place, followed by Schwarz Group, Aldi, Costco, Ahold Delhaize and Carrefour.

“For most companies in this ranking, retail sales and profits grew even as shoppers changed their work and personal routines and the channels they shopped,” Kantar Senior Vice President of Global Insights and Technology David Marcotte said. “Shoppers in 2023 repeatedly said they needed more convenience from retailers, and the brands that focused on convenience were successful.”

Kantar’s ranking system gives points to retailers according to their domestic and international retail revenues. To qualify for the ranking, retailers must have a direct investment in at least three countries.
