The Sports Authority (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) has acquired the Golf Day trademark, the name of the former specialty retailer known for offering premium golf products. Golf Day, an 80-store New England specialty merchandise chain, went into bankruptcy in 2000.

The Sports Authority said it will launch branded Golf Day concept shops within select Sports Authority locations throughout the country.

“The acquisition of the Golf Day brand reflects our commitment to growing the [golf] category,” said Sports Authority president and cmo Elliott Kerbis. “The purchase is also consistent with our overall strategy of differentiating The Sports Authority [by] developing dedicated specialty shops within our stores.”

Golf Day had been owned by Trend-Lines Inc. (Lynn, Mass.), a catalog operation that filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2000. It emerged in 2001 and was absorbed by one of its former subsidiaries, tool and equipment retailer Woodworkers Warehouse.

The Sports Authority operates 200 full-line sporting goods stores in 32 states.
