Realty Company Announces Service-Oriented Malls

Shopping centers geared toward experiences rather than goods

With the increasing popularity of online shopping and showrooming, Glimcher Realty Trust (Columbus, Ohio) is experimenting with malls focusing on services, such as hair care, dining and movies, rather than consumer products, The New York Times reports. At the Scottsdale Quarter mall (Scottsdale, Ariz.), there are still specialty apparel retailers, but a majority of shops also offer a service or experiential component, such as hairstyling, crafting or dining. The company hopes to lure internet-savvy shoppers with offerings that can’t be replicated online.
