Safeway to spend nearly $2 billion this year to upgrade 200 stores, build 80 more

Safeway Inc. (Pleasanton, Calif.), the nation's third-largest grocery chain, announced plans to spend $1.9 billion in 2002 to renovate 200 existing stores and open about 80 new ones.

During the first two quarters of 2002 (ending June 15), the retailer invested approximately $669 million in capital expenditures, opening 35 new stores and closing 16.

Safeway operates 1792 stores in the U.S. and Canada.
