Sears Canada Acquiring Target Brands

With Target Corp.’s (Minneapolis) departure from Canada, Sears Canada (Toronto) is hoping to lure Target loyalists with two brands well-known to Target shoppers.

According to the Huffington Post Canada, Sears has signed a licensing agreement with former Target Canada supplier Cherokee Global Brands. Starting in spring 2016, Sears Canada stores will carry Cherokee’s lines of clothing, accessories and footwear, including the Liz Lange Maternity line, a best-seller at Target stores in the U.S. and Canada.

In a separate agreement last week, Sears Canada also announced a plan to launch a menswear line with hockey star Wayne Gretzky. The line will be exclusive to Sears and will begin to roll out at stores this October. Speaking to the news outlet, Sears Canada ceo Ronald Boire said the moves support the company’s goal to “make big lines bigger and make small lines go away.”
