Sweats Like a Mannequin

Chinese scientists develop 'Walter,' who perspires

Scientists in Hong Kong have created a perspiring mannequin, to help the military develop more comfortable uniforms and even space suits.

” 'Walter'perspires when he gets hot under the collar,” said Jintu Fan, an associate professor at the Institute of Textiles and Clothing at Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

Filled with pipes containing heated water, Walter has a “body temperature” of 37 degrees Celsius, three layers of custom-built skin and motorized limbs. “The top layer allows water to pass through, while the bottom layer is water-resistant,” said Fan. “The middle layer controls the perspiration process by only allowing water to pass through in vapor form.”

The skin can be removed, said Fan, and replaced with skins of different porosity, to evaluate garments'performance to varying rates of perspiration.
