Target's Style Earns New York Art Directors' Admiration

Retailer nabs Management Award for 'Democratized Style'

Accolades from the Art Directors Club of New York makes it unanimous — everyone thinks “Tahr-jhay” is fabulous. Target –the Minneapolis chain famous for mass merchandise and affordable style — garnered the organization's prestigious Management Award at the club's June gala, for its accomplishments in design.

The award recognizes all sorts of companies that have seen the relationship between design and performance flourish. While it has occasionally been given to retailers (including Macy's, Benetton and Gap), it is not an annual award. The Art Directors Club reserves the right to bestow the Management Award when board members feel it has been truly earned. The last time the honor was awarded was 1997.

Target was honored for demonstrating excellence in marketing and store design. This includes the eye-catching, red and white bulls eye logo, but is also goes beyond that. It also honors the retailer's ad campaign style and even the new Michael Graves-designed merchandise. Target has consistently used creativity to sell and creativity to make consumers feel good about their purchases. According to the Art Directors Club, the Graves line of home accessories are just one example of how Target has “democratized” great style.
