Luxury brand Versace (Milan) is partnering with French phone maker ModeLabs to design its own mobile phone line. The new phone will be unveiled to Versace VIP clients at a Paris couture event next week, before hitting stores this spring.

ModeLabs, which also makes handsets for luxury brand Christian Dior and watchmaker Tag Heuer, is working with artistic director Donatella Versace to craft the phone, which will feature high-end materials such as leather and can be customized with specific colors and materials.

“Before, brands couldn't imagine that a luxury telephone was possible,” says Stephane Bohbot, ModeLabs’ ceo. “Now limited distribution and customized design have created a new interest for brands in telephones.”

Luxury rivals Giorgio Armani, Prada and Dolce & Gabbana also offer their own phones. The Versace phone is expected to retail for more than $5000.
