VM+SD Readers' Choice Poll

What's In and What's Out in 2003?

In: Reasonable, analytical, long-term assessments of retail design trends and needs.

Out: In/Out lists.

It's time again for VM+SD's annual Readers'Choice poll. Last year, you told us:

The most important retail events of the previous 12 months were

  • Prada's new SoHo store (“intrigued by Rem Koolhaas'moxie and Prada's over-the-top spending”)
  • Kmart's bankruptcy and reorganization (“it will make a lot of people sit up and take notice”)
  • Gap's decline (“it's as if an iceberg hit the retail Titanic”); and, of course
  • September 11, 2001 (“the day everything stopped”)

Your raved about Kohl's, lifestyle branding, E*TRADE and Wal-Mart (though you cautioned that “THEY MUST BE STOPPED, or we'll all be working for them.”)

You predicted the demise of Circuit City, Eddie Bauer, Linens n Things, Athlete's Foot, Dillard's, Millers Outpost.

Your 2002 Hot List included Nike, J. Jill, Target, Kohl's and Simon Doonan.

Your 2002 Not List included Sears, Banana Republic, The Limited, Gap, Karl Lagerfeld and kiosks.

So, what do you have to say for yourself in 2003? The poll will go live on May 1, 2003, at www.vmsd.com. Log on after that date and you'll be shown how to cast your votes. The deadline for responses will be May 23, 2003, and the results will be published in the July issue of VM+SD.
