John Walton, the second-oldest son of Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton, died yesterday in a plane crash near Jackson Hole Airport in Wyoming.

Walton, 58, was the only person aboard an ultralight aircraft when it crashed about 1:20 p.m., Wal-Mart said in a statement.

Walton was listed in March as the world’s 11th-richest person by Forbes magazine, with a net worth of $18.2 billion. He had been a Wal-Mart board member since 1992 and was chairman of the holding company True North Partners (Bentonville, Ark.). He was also chairman of the Walton Family Foundation.

He worked as a crop duster and a boat builder before founding True North. He was married and had one son. The cause of the crash has not been determined. Wal-Mart declined to comment further.

A member of the Green Berets during the Vietnam War, Walton was awarded the Silver Star for saving members of his unit.
