As the Bauer Breaks

Spiegel to close 25 traditional Eddie Bauer stores, but to open 10 larger, new-concept stores

The Spiegel Group (Downers Grove, Ill.) has announced that it will close 25 Eddie Bauer stores this year, but will open 10 new stores based on the larger, updated prototype that was launched in Deer Park, Ill., in the fall.

Earlier this month, Spiegel had reported a 12 percent decrease in sales at Eddie Bauer stores for the four weeks ended Jan. 27, 2001, reflecting a high level of markdown pricing during the month following lackluster sales during the holiday season.

The company had previously announced “aggressive actions” for Eddie Bauer, including changes to its management team and refinement of its apparel offer (focusing on more-classic styling).

The new Eddie Bauer store in Deer Park, with a design by Chute Gerdeman (Columbus, Ohio), will be profiled in the March issue of VM+SD.
