Books-A-Million (Birmingham, Ala.) has launched its new BAM! Publishing DIY, a tool with which authors can create, edit and self-publish books.

The product is designed to compete with Amazon’s CreateSpace service and other similar services. The system includes tools to design, print, and distribute paperbacks as well as e-books that can be sold through multiple platforms, including Amazon and iTunes.

The company is also testing an “Espresso Book Machine” at two Books-A-Million stores in Birmingham and South Portland, Maine, where books can be printed and picked up in person. Books-A-Million says the services are geared toward authors looking to sell their publications as well as those interested in producing personal projects, such as family histories, cookbooks or custom journals.
