Discount Retailers Expanding in 2016

Walmart at top of the list

Commercial real estate and analytics firm CoStar (Washington, D.C.) released a list of the retailers who are adding the most square footage to their fleet this year, and about half of the stores that made the top 10 list were discount and off-price stores.

The companies that made that list included Walmart (Bentonville, Ark.), followed by Dollar General (Goodlettsville, Tenn.), Forever 21 (Los Angeles), Family Dollar (Matthews, N.C.), Dollar Tree (Chesapeake, Va.), Marshalls (Framingham, Mass.) and T.J. Maxx (Framingham, Mass.). Walmart plans to add the most: more than 15 million square feet.

According to the Chicago Tribune, this shows that not all retailers are struggling in today’s economy and some are even expanding considerably. Despite the expansion, though, some of the retailers are opting to build smaller stores than they had in the past. For instance, about 80 percent of this year’s new Dollar Generals will be about 20 percent smaller.
