Kohl’s (Menomonee Falls, WI) announced new plans to invest in its physical stores, including the opening of 100 small-format locations over the next four years.

The retailer’s expansion of its small-format concept comes after an initial pilot program consisting of 20 such stores. A Kohl’s small-format store measures approximately 35,000 square feet compared to the 80,000-square-foot average of a traditional location.

The department store chain is also testing self-checkout and is planning an expanded rollout of self-serve returns, which are currently available in more than 100 stores. Additionally, the company says BOPIS service will be available in all stores by the end of the year.
